Towards Simulation and Risk Assessment of Weather-Related Cascading Outages

چکیده
Weather and environmental factors are verified to have played significant roles in historical major cascading outages and blackouts. Therefore, in the simulation and risk assessment of cascading outages in power systems, it is necessary to consider the weather and environmental effects. This paper proposes a method for the risk assessment of weather-related cascading outages. Based on the analysis of historical outage records and temperature-dependent physical outage mechanisms of transmission lines, an outage rate model considering weather condition and conductor temperature is proposed, and the analytical form of outage probability of lines are derived. With the weatherdependent outage model, a two-stage risk assessment method based on Markovian tree (MT) search is proposed, which consists of offline full assessment, and online efficient update of risk assessment results and continued MT search using updated NWP data. The test cases on NPCC 140-bus test system model in winter and summer scenarios verify the advantages of the proposed risk assessment method in both accuracy and efficiency.

Exploring cascading outages and weather via processing historic data
We describe some bulk statistics of historical initial line outages and the implications for forming contingency lists and understanding which initial outages are likely to lead to further cascading. We use historical outage data to estimate the effect of weather on cascading via cause codes and via NOAA storm data. Bad weather significantly increases outage rates and interacts with cascading e...
متن کاملProbability of failure of overloaded lines in cascading failures
Power grids are vulnerable to cascading failures, as shown by previous blackouts or major system disturbances. Line outages due to overload are often the main contributors to the cascading failures leading to these undesired situations. Indeed, the more a line is overloaded, the larger is its sagging, and hence the probability that it will be tripped. It is necessary to quantify in a realistic ...

This paper addresses how to improve the computational efficiency and estimation reliability in cascading outage analysis. We first formulate a cascading outage as a Markov chain with specific state space and transition probability by leveraging the Markov property of cascading outages. It provides a rigorous formulation that allows analytic investigation on cascading outages in the framework of...
متن کامل[email protected] Risk Analysis for Assessment of Vegetation Impact on Outages in Electric Power Systems
Combination of severe weather conditions and vegetation impacts is the most dominant cause of outages in electric power systems. Instance of high speed wind and heavy precipitation may cause trees to come in contact with power lines due to the following reasons: a) branches break off and fly into lines; b) complete trees topple when moved by wind, or c) tree branches grow into the lines. The ma...
متن کاملManagement of Cascading Outage Risk Based on Risk Gradient and Markovian Tree Search
Since cascading outages are major threats to power system operations, it is of great significance to reduce the risk of potential cascading outages. In this paper, a method for reduction of cascading outage risk based on Markovian tree (MT) search is proposed. Based on the MT expansion of the cascading outage risk, the risk gradient is computed with a forward-backward tree search scheme. The co...
